About driveway sealcoating
Asphalt turns grey as the sun breaks down its binder, and once the surface dries out, water gets into small cracks and freeze and thaw cycles make them bigger. Sealcoating puts a protective layer back on top.
Sealer needs warm, dry weather to cure, so on Long Island the season runs from late spring into early fall. Most driveways need a fresh coat every two to three years.
How the job goes
Clean and edge
The driveway is cleaned and edged so the sealer bonds to the asphalt.
Treat cracks and oil spots
Cracks are cleaned out and oil spots primed so the sealer holds over them.
Apply the sealer
Sealer goes on evenly, then the driveway is closed off while it cures.
